I love projects that are not only easy to sew but also a little playful, and the Bloom Pouch is just that. The idea came from watching flowers open in my garden. There’s something so satisfying about seeing them bloom, and I wanted to create a pouch that opens in a similar way. That little “wow” moment when you pull the drawstring and the pouch unfolds like a flower is why it became the Bloom Pouch.

This pouch is perfect for beginners because it’s a fun way to practice sewing curves and working with drawstrings, while still being incredibly versatile. I can see it holding sewing notions, makeup, small gifts, kids’ treasures, or even your favourite snacks. Plus, once you’ve made one, it’s easy to experiment with different fabrics and sizes.

It’s one of those projects that reminds me why I fell in love with bag-making in the first place: taking a flat piece of fabric and turning it into something three-dimensional, functional, and just a little bit joyful.

Supplies You’ll Need for Your Drawstring Bag

Before you start sewing, here’s a quick list of what you’ll need to make your Bloom Pouch:

  • Pattern: You’ll need the Bloom Drawstring Pouch pattern or your own customised template if you want a different size.
  • Fabric: I used quilting cotton for my pouches, but I recommend any lightweight or drapey fabric. It makes it much easier to gather the top with the drawstring.
  • Drawstring cord or ribbon: About 2 metres, depending on your pouch size.
  • 2 eyelets and tools to set them in: I used 5 mm eyelets on my pouches.
  • Scissors or a rotary cutter to cut out your fabric.
  • Pins or clips: These will help hold everything in place while you sew.
  • Measuring tape or ruler.
  • Fabric marker or chalk: Since we’re marking the right side of the fabric, use something that can be easily removed, such as fabric chalk or an erasable marker. This way, you won’t have any permanent markings once you’re done sewing!
  • Plus, thread, needle and sewing machine.
  • Optional: A small piece of stabiliser or interfacing to stabilise the area around where the eyelets will be installed.
