It all started with two different projects — one was a simple crossbody bag I teach inside the Bag Maker Community (kind of a no-fuss, grab-and-go style that’s super beginner-friendly), and another, a freebie you might already know: the Flexi Coin Pouch.
One day, I was sketching and playing around with ideas when I realised… hang on a second. What if I took the best bits of both and mashed them into one design? I took the simple shape of the crossbody, added the hidden back pocket from the pouch, and then gave the whole thing a little upgrade — a gusset for extra space, and some refined details to bring it all together.
And that’s how the Mallory Mini Crossbody Bag came to life.
It’s stylish, practical, unisex, and (in my totally unbiased opinion) a whole lot of fun to sew. Let me show you what makes it so special…

What Makes this Hip Bag Special?
The Mallory Mini Crossbody Bag isn’t just another cute accessory — it’s a design packed with thoughtful features that make it both functional and stylish. Let me walk you through what sets this bag apart:
- Hidden Back Pocket: One of my favourite features, borrowed from my free Flexi Coin Pouch pattern. This clever pocket is perfect for stashing your phone or any small essentials that you want to keep easily accessible. It’s discreet yet practical, adding to the overall design without compromising the clean lines of the bag.
- Flap with Press Lock: The flap not only adds a sleek, polished look to the bag but also features a press lock closure for security. It’s a simple yet secure way to keep your belongings safe, while still looking chic.
- Three Card Pockets: Tucked neatly behind the flap are three handy card slots — just right for your bank card, travel pass, or ID. They’re ideal for keeping your essentials close at hand and easy to grab when you’re on the go.
- Adjustable Webbing Strap with Contrasting Connectors: I didn’t want to sacrifice style for comfort, so the strap is fully adjustable, making it easy to wear for any body type. The contrasting connectors add a fun pop of detail and give the bag a modern edge.
Finished Measurements
W x H x D
15 cm x 20 cm x 3 cm (6” x 8” x 1 1⁄8″)
The Mallory is the perfect size to hold all the essentials. The back pocket fits most mobile phones, while the main compartment is roomy enough for sunglasses, keys, lip balm, and more. And thanks to the built-in card pockets, you can ditch your bulky wallet and just take what you need.
The Mallory Mini’s clean lines, compact shape, and unisex design make it a super versatile accessory that works with all sorts of outfits. It’s got that casual, everyday feel — whether you’re heading out for a coffee, running errands, or off on a weekend stroll, Mallory’s the kind of bag that just works without you having to think twice.

What’s the Difficulty Level?
I’ve labelled this one as an intermediate pattern — but don’t let that scare you off! The reason it gets that tag is mainly down to the curves and the final topstitching, which can be a bit fiddly because of the bag’s compact size. But honestly, the rest of the project is really straightforward.
If you’re a confident beginner and you’ve already sewn a few bags, this could be the perfect next step. I’ve included detailed step-by-step instructions with clear photos and there’s a full video tutorial too, so you won’t be tackling it alone.

You’ll get a proper look at each stage of the process, plus I share little tips and tricks along the way to help things go smoothly (especially when it comes to those curved seams and topstitching at the end!).
It’s the perfect companion to the written instructions and will give you that extra boost of confidence when you sit down to sew.
Beth from Sew Country (one of my amazing pattern testers) has created a full video tutorial showing you how she made her version of the Mallory Mini Crossbody Bag. Want to Hack Your Mallory?
Looking to customise your Mallory Mini Crossbody Bag and make it truly your own? I hosted a live class where I shared some of my favourite ways to tweak this pattern.
In the video, you’ll learn how to:
- Make the gusset wider, and what changes you’ll need to make to the rest of the pattern.
- Move the closure placement when you’re using different hardware, like a turn lock or magnetic snap.
- Add a seam to the back of the flap if you’re working with directional prints (so your fabric doesn’t end up upside down).
- Tweak your lining to make it slightly smaller.
- Adjust the strap connectors to fit different webbing sizes.
- And if you’re feeling adventurous, I’ll also explain how to try a drop-in lining instead of the birthing method.
Let me know if you try any of these hacks. I’d love to see how you make it your own!

I think the way you assemble the flap pocket piece is great! I like that there is that additional slip pocket created by it. I think it will be something that my customers will purchase. I do want to try the alternate credit card slots the next time. It should be a quick sew the second time around.” @jen_lahman_handmade

“I loved making this pattern so much, I made 2 bags! It is the perfect size to hold all my essentials, the back pocket is great for my cell phone and the card slots are safely tucked away on the front panel, under the flap. I printed the pattern into white vinyl (signage vinyl), and applied it to thick card, then cut it out. It was quick to cut out and do the prep-work. The instructions, with accompanying photos were clear, and steps were easy to follow. I sew with an industrial machine, so it was very easy to sew through the leather layers, but should I have used a different fabric, I am sure I could have used my domestic sewing machine. The Mallory bag was really an enjoyable project to do. I love the finished project and will definitely be making more of these! Thank you Monika for the opportunity of being one of your testers.”
