You know those little projects that you just can’t stop making? The Zip-up Cardholder is one of those for me. I’ve made more than I can count. They’re quick, practical, and a great way to get your sewjo back when you need a win.
But after sharing the pattern, and gifting a few myself, I started hearing the same thing over and over…
“It’s fab, but is there a way to keep the cards from falling out?”
“I’d love a flap on the back to hold receipts or extra bits.”
So I thought… Let’s do it. Let’s give this little wallet a couple of tweaks and make it even better.
Here’s what the original Zip-up cardholder looks like.

My new modified Zip-up cardholder.

What’s New?
I made two simple changes to the original pattern:
- A snap connector on the front
It holds the front card pockets shut, so nothing slides out. Easy fix, but it makes a big difference.
- A flap with snaps for the back pocket
That back slip pocket is handy, but it’s wide open. The flap keeps everything tucked in and looks pretty cute too.
They’re small changes, but they take the whole thing up a notch in terms of function. You still get that nice slim shape, but with a bit more peace of mind.
Last week, I shared how to hack the original Zip-up Cardholder pattern. If you missed it, you can check it out here:

How to Sew the Modified Wallet
I filmed a step-by-step tutorial to show you exactly how to make this modified version of the Zip-up Cardholder. Whether you want to add just the snap connector, just the flap, or go for both, the video walks you through everything from start to finish.
You can follow along at your own pace, so just grab your pattern, a bit of fabric, and hit play. Once you’ve made one, don’t be surprised if you end up making a few more. They’re seriously addictive!
