Coffee cup sleeve – a project born from a desire for comfort. Furthermore, its eco-friendly impact makes this DIY project even more fantastic. By repurposing fabric scraps and eliminating the need for disposable paper sleeves, you can create a personalised accessory and contribute to reducing waste! Do I need to say more?!
You may relate to this: I’ve grown fond of my regular tea spot, but one thing has always irked me – those flimsy paper cup sleeves. I take my tea black, and those sleeves aren’t thick enough to shield my hands from the scalding heat. That’s when the idea struck – why not make my own reusable cup sleeves?
Now, let me be honest – my first attempt was a bit of a disaster. 🫠 Why?
I used lightweight fabric with no insulation, and let’s just say I learned a valuable lesson about the importance of choosing the right materials for a project! 🔥🤦♀️
After a few iterations, I’m thrilled to say I’ve created the perfect non-slip cup cozy that protects my hands from the heat and adds a touch of personal flair to my daily tea ritual. What’s more, I’ve added a handle for a secure grip, ensuring my cup won’t slip from my hands, and an elastic loop for those summery iced drinks with a straw – talk about versatility!

Drafting the perfect cup cozy
At first, I thought about creating a printable template for you, but I quickly changed my mind because cup sizes vary from shop to shop, and you may prefer to reuse a glass or plastic cup from home. In that case, a generic template could have been impractical, potentially leading to ill-fitting sleeves. So, instead, I’ve got something even better – a pattern drafting class on YouTube!
In this class, I will show you how to measure and draft a cup sleeve template explicitly tailored to your unique cup size.
We’ll delve into the intricacies of pattern drafting, starting with the importance of taking precise measurements. Understanding your cup’s dimensions is the key to achieving a snug fit that looks fantastic and serves its purpose flawlessly.
I’ll introduce you to one of my go-to pattern drafting techniques – the slash-and-spread method. This ingenious approach allows us to manipulate the pattern, accommodating the specific contours of the cup. The skills you’ll acquire in this pattern drafting class go beyond creating a fabulous cup sleeve. With this method, you can seamlessly add pleats, gathers, or darts to your bags, transforming them into unique and personalised creations.

Before diving into the lesson, gather the supplies to create your bespoke cup sleeve pattern:
- Paper for your pattern. For small projects like this I like to use printing paper, but you can use brown craft paper, pattern paper or even old newspapers.
- Pencil for sketching. I prefer to use a mechanical pencil for precision.
- A pair of sharp paper scissors to cut out your template.
- Tracing paper to create your pattern (baking or parchment paper also works great).
- A tape measure to take the dimensions of your cup.
- A straight ruler to ensure accurate measurements.
- Don’t forget to grab your cup – the star of the show! Having it on hand will allow you to tailor your sleeve specifically to its size and shape.
Are your ready?

Create a stylish non-slip coffee cup sleeve in minutes!
Now that you’ve got your custom-size template for the cup cozy, let’s dive into the exciting world of sewing!
Crafting reusable cup sleeves goes beyond adding a personal touch to your daily sipping routine – it’s a small yet impactful way to reduce waste. Picture the countless disposable sleeves you’ll avoid by slipping on your handmade creation each time you reach for your favourite hot or iced drink.
To complement the pattern drafting class, I’ve created a separate video tutorial that guides you through the construction process using your personalised template. This detailed tutorial doesn’t just cover the basics; I spill the tea (pun intended) on stitching tricks, picking the right interfacing, and more. Remember my first attempt failure? Insulation is key!
Want more? Add a handle for that extra secure grip or an elastic loop for your straw.
Oh, and guess what? I even made one with a label saying, “You look really pretty today” – because who doesn’t need a daily dose of positivity with their drink?
And if you worry about your cup sleeve slipping off, I have the perfect solution, too.
Whether you’re a sewing newbie or a seasoned pro, this video tutorial is packed with insightful nuggets to enhance your sewing skills and elevate your crafting game.

Supplies needed to make your own custom reusable cup cozy
This project is as quick and easy as it gets!
Raid your stash because this project is the perfect excuse to give those fabric scraps a second life. You will need external and lining fabric such as quilting cotton, cotton canvas, denim or corduroy, but stick to natural fibres. If you are looking for a new fabric, check out Minerva! They have beautiful materials available in many colours and prints!
When working with a lightweight fabric, such as quilting cotton or cotton poplin, fuse woven interfacing to the back of the fabric to give them extra stability and durability.
Insulation wadding or fusible fleece is a must-have to protect your hands, shielding them from the heat or a refreshing chill.
Here’s where you can get a bit fancy – add a glitter elastic for your straw or a cute label and grab non-slip elastic to make sure your sleeve stays snug on your cup.
And let’s not forget: a self-drafted template for your cup, sewing machine, thread, needle, fabric scissors and iron.
This project is a beautiful opportunity to share eco-friendly love with friends and family. Consider making cup sleeves as thoughtful, handmade gifts for your loved ones – a unique and sustainable way to show you care.
