What you’ll need to make the coasters

To make your own heart-shaped coasters, you’ll need a few things to get started. Here’s a list of supplies:

Fabric

Choose your favourite fabrics to bring your heart coasters to life. Opt for fun patterns or colours that match your style, aesthetics, or theme, such as Valentine’s Day. Raid your fabric stash for those charming scraps you’ve been holding onto. If you are looking for a new fabric, check out Minerva! They have beautiful materials available in many colours and prints!

You will need two 18 cm (7″) fabric squares to make one coaster.

Considering the practicality of your coasters, using fabrics that are easy to wash and absorb moisture is critical. I recommend using woven, natural fibre materials for the best results. Fabrics like cotton, linen, or a cotton-linen blend work wonderfully for this project. These materials are not only durable and easy to work with, but they also have a lovely texture that adds to the charm of the coasters.

However, if you’re looking to add an extra layer of protection to your furniture or prefer a water-resistant option, you can opt for fabrics like oilcloth or laminated cotton.

Woven interfacing

When working with a lightweight fabric, fuse woven interfacing to the back of the fabric to give it extra stability and durability.

Single-fold bias binding

I used 18 mm (3/4″) bias binding. However, depending on your seam allowance and the thickness of your finished coaster, you may want to go for a bigger size. You can make one or use ready-made bias binding that matches your fabric.

If you want to make a custom-size bias binding, I have a detailed video tutorial on my YouTube channel!

Stabiliser

Fleece or batting adds a soft and cushioned feel to the coasters, making them more comfortable to use and handle. It also helps to absorb any moisture or condensation from drinks, ensuring your coasters stay dry and effectively protect your furniture.

Additionally, adding a layer of fleece or batting gives your coasters some insulation, keeping hot beverages hot and cold drinks cold for a little longer. This makes them even more functional and enjoyable to use.

From a crafting perspective, the fleece or batting provides structure and thickness to the coasters, giving them a professional and polished look. It helps maintain the shape and ensures durability, so your coasters will last for years.

And let’s remember other essentials such as a sewing machinethreadneedlefabric scissorspins or wonder clips and iron.

I absolutely love customising my heart coasters by quilting the fabric and using contrasting bias binding. It truly elevates the overall look and makes them extra special.

I know sewing bias binding can seem intimidating at first, but trust me, with some practice, you’ll become a pro in no time! I used to struggle with it too, but after dedicating some time to perfecting my technique, it has become one of my favourite ways to finish the raw edges.

This project is a fantastic opportunity to practice your sewing skills and conquer those tricky corners and curves with confidence.
