Amelia Mini Tote Sewing Pattern: A Structured Crossbody Bag with Curved Side Pockets

I am so excited to finally share the Amelia mini tote bag with you! This sewing pattern came from a moment of wanting something I could not quite find — a small crossbody bag that felt intentional and beautifully made, but was also a fun sewing project.

I had already designed a larger tote bag that I loved, but I kept imagining it smaller, cuter, the kind of mini tote you could grab without thinking twice. So I made a prototype, tested it, refined it, and kept making it smaller until it felt exactly right. The Amelia mini tote is the result of that journey.

What Makes the Amelia Mini Tote Special

The first thing you will notice about the Amelia is her shape. Those curves are not something you see very often in bag sewing patterns, and that is exactly why I designed her this way. What could have been a simple trapezoid becomes something completely unique and modern. The front and back panels are also a beautiful opportunity to showcase a stunning fabric print or add an embroidery design to your handmade bag. So if you have been holding onto a special fabric waiting for the right project, the Amelia might just be it.

The Main Features

Side Pockets

Most slip pockets in bag patterns sit flat against the main fabric. I wanted something different for this mini tote bag design The Amelia’s side pockets are designed to stand slightly away from the sides, making it so much easier to reach inside and grab what you need without any fuss. I tweaked the size and shape of these pockets so many times during testing until they felt perfectly balanced with the rest of the bag.

Snap Connector

The snap connector wraps around the top of the mini crossbody bag and serves two purposes. It keeps the top slightly closed so it does not gape open, and it also adds a really beautiful finishing detail to the exterior. It is one of those small touches that make your handmade bag feel polished and intentional.

D-Ring Connectors and Adjustable Strap

On each side of this structured mini bag you will find D-ring connectors so you can clip on your adjustable crossbody strap. This means you can wear the Amelia comfortably across your body, leaving your hands completely free.

Optional Purse Feet

The Amelia has a separate base panel, and if you would like to take the finished look up a notch, you can install purse feet onto it. The feet protect the fabric from getting dirty or damaged when you set the bag down, and they add a really lovely, professional touch to the finished bag. They are completely optional, but I personally love adding them.

Interior Zipper Pocket

Inside the Amelia, you will find a zipper pocket on one side. This is perfect for storing smaller items like lipstick, a mirror, jewellery, or anything you want to keep safe and easy to find, while making this bag your everyday companion.

Interior Slip Pocket

On the other side of the interior, you will find a slip pocket, ideal for items you need to access quickly, like a small notebook or a travel card.

Key Connector

And finally, my personal favourite interior detail — the key connector. I cannot tell you how many times I have lost my keys at the bottom of my bag. The key connector lets you clip your keys on so they are always exactly where you left them, and your zipper pocket stays free for everything else.

Finished Measurements

W x H x D

29 cm x 25.5 cm x 10 cm (11 1/2” x 10” x 4”)

Although I wanted to create a true mini tote, I also wanted to make sure she was not so small that she became impractical. The main compartment is spacious enough to comfortably fit a small book, your phone, wallet, keys, and other small everyday essentials. And those side pockets? They are perfect for storing your sunglasses or a foldable reusable shopping bag — the kind of things you want to keep accessible without digging through the main compartment every single time.

What’s The Difficulty Level?

The Amelia mini tote is labelled as an intermediate-level pattern. This means you will need to have made a few bags before, and you should be comfortable working with stabilisers like foam and sewing through multiple layers and bulk. If you have that experience, you are ready for this one.

The reason I labelled this pattern as intermediate is because of the curves along the side pockets and the top of the bag. But here is the thing. I have written every single step in the PDF pattern instructions with step-by-step colour photos and detailed explanations. I am positive that if you take it one step at a time and trust the process, you will create a beautiful bag. The curves might feel intimidating at first, but once you nail them, you will feel so proud of what you have made.

Get Inspired: Pattern Testers’ Makes

One of the things I love the most about sewing is how the same pattern can look completely different depending on the fabric and colour you choose. A bold print transforms the Amelia into something playful and adventurous. A classic neutral makes her feel timeless and elegant. A rich texture adds depth and luxury.

If you are not sure about your Amelia, take a look at the versions my pattern testers created. They used different colours, prints, textures, and fabrics, and every single one looks stunning and completely one-of-a-kind.

Before you scroll down to see their beautiful makes, I want to say a huge thank you to every single one of my pattern testers. I could not have done this without you. 🤍

“I think it is a wonderfully designed bag. The materials used can make it a little more difficult if say vinyl, for instance, is thicker.”

Heather Duncan

“This pattern is well written and easy to follow. It’s a fun pattern with some great skill-building. The completed bag is adorable.”

@luscreativecloset

“I seriously think this would be cool as a larger bag as well.”

Karen Harwick

“Honestly, I think the bag should be bigger, only because it was almost impossible to complete the bases at the end. There was so much bulk for me on the side pockets, I would probably not do the trim on the inside, just the outside for the desired look. I don’t think I could have made my version on a domestic sewing machine. For me, this was a very challenging bag, even though I’ve been bag-making for 2 years. The end product was very nice.”

@jenlahmanhandmade

“This was such a fun sew! I really enjoyed how thoughtfully all the interesting shapes and curves came together. I really liked the construction and final look of the trims.”

@2nd.make

“I love the contrasting look of this mini tote bag with the unique trims on the top and sides! The size is perfect, and all the pockets are so functional for daily use.”

@aderrycraft

“Such a beautiful bag with the curves in all the right places. A satisfying sew that I took my time with. The curves fit perfectly. 👌”

@kaytriffitt

“I loved the pattern. It was so clear and well-written. The snap connector was brilliant.”

@custommadebytammy

“The bag was a fun make, and those curves add a big visual impact.”

@evansvicki2

“The pattern was great as always! Perfect little tote, and the right size to carry essentials and then some, and the fact that it has a crossbody strap is perfect.”

@libylulasgarden

“This pattern was a good challenge with a satisfying finish. Definitely play around with multiple prints and panels.”

@reni.crafts

“The Amelia is a cute, stylish tote. The curves take it up a notch, giving it a designer feel. With lots of room, inside pockets and a key leash, the Amelia will become my new favourite bag.”

Melissa Eby

“Love the pattern, fun and easy to make. Very attractive and functional.”

Terry Trageser

“This is an impressive tote bag pattern with a design that truly stands out. The unique shaping and beautiful curves make it both visually striking and a great skill‑building challenge. If you’re looking for a pattern that pushes your sewing in a fun, rewarding way, this one is absolutely worth making.”

@emeraldstitchesstudio

“I love this pattern, and both my daughters have asked me to make them one, so that is a big positive! I love the shape, and the side pockets are very handy for a key fob or phone. I may consider adding a small strap in one of the pockets to keep the key fob safe, rather than inside? Otherwise, a very fun pattern that was enjoyable to sew, minus that last step of sewing through the side to do the lining base – I would encourage anyone using something stiffer than quilter’s cotton to make sure they leave almost the entire seam open.”

@boo_bug_creations

“I actually liked the pattern. I would also like to try it at a larger size. It does sit up well using the vinyl and WPC. The curving top makes the bag very attractive; possibly an alternative to the strap connector, one might want to place in a zipper to close the bag.”

@jhejza

“It’s a very cute, practical little bucket bag ideal for all ages.”

@jo_d_d

“Awesome pattern! Great size and shape and perfect for day to day use.”

@mysewingadventuresaus

“It is a great pattern, easy to sew and a great size for an everyday bag. Love the side pockets.”

@pmaccompany

“Overall, I found the pattern enjoyably challenging and already planning to make another one. The hardest part was sewing the base, but I don’t have any recommendations on how to improve the design. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to test :)”

@needleandtote

“Love it. I wasn’t sure about the accent band when I started, but once it came together, it was perfect. Love the size.”

@oliveiraoriginals

“I really enjoyed every minute of sewing it, I couldn’t wait for it to be finished! I love that it’s not big but still very roomy for my everyday things!”

@May-Dee Designs

“It’s a cute little bag! Perfect to carry everyday stuff.”

@orchic_handmade

“Nice bag! Not very big, not very small – just the perfect size for everyday items.”
