How to Add a Flex Frame to Your Sewing Projects: Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

Have you ever been curious about flex frames but felt a bit intimidated about trying one? I totally understand—I used to feel the same!

But after giving it a go in my latest Flexi Coin Pouch project, I discovered just how easy (and fun!) they are to work with. A flex frame is a simple mechanism that pops open with a gentle squeeze, and snaps closed effortlessly, making it perfect for bags, pouches, and any project where you want quick access without zippers or complicated closures.

Let me show you how to add a flex frame to any project you like. Whether you’re working on a coin pouch, sunglasses case, or even a small storage bag, this technique will add a touch of convenience and flair to your creations.

What is a Flex Frame Closure?

A flex frame closure is a versatile and secure way to add a snap-shut opening to your sewing projects. Unlike zippers or buttons, a flex frame allows the opening to “pop” open by squeezing the hinges at both ends  and it stays that way until you release the pressure. This closure style is ideal for pouches, small purses, glasses cases, or anything you want to keep tightly closed but easily accessible.

Add A Flex Frame To Your Project

Before we add the flex frame, it’s essential to have your project fully sewn and finished, as this type of closure needs to be inserted at the very end.

The flex frame works by sliding into two small “tunnels” that hold it securely in place and allow it to snap open and closed easily.

In the phot below, I have my Flexi Coin Pouch ready for the final step—adding the flex frame to complete the closure.

In this close-up, you can see the flex frame with a small pin that comes with most closures like this. This pin is crucial for securing the frame’s open end, so keep it safe. If the pin is lost, the closure won’t function properly, and your pouch won’t open and close as it should.

Note: I got my 8.5 cm (3 3/8”) flex frame from here. They come in a range of sizes and styles, so you can choose the one that best fits your project.

Step 1: Insert the Flex Frame

Take your finished pouch and open the flex frame.

While holding the frame open, insert each end into the tunnels you created earlier (A). Carefully slide the flex frame through (B) until both ends are fully inserted. Once the frame is in place, align the two halves of the hinge (C), ensuring they meet evenly and sit properly to secure the frame.

Step 2: Secure the Flex Frame with the Pin

Take the small pin and slide it into the hinge (A) to secure the flex frame.

If the pin doesn’t want to go all the way down, it might be because the ends of the frame aren’t aligned properly. In that case, gently wiggle the frame until the ends are aligned and the pin slides in smoothly. Once the pin is in place, use scissors, pliers, or a screwdriver (B) to carefully bend the flap at the end of the hinge (C), securing the pin in position.

This will ensure the flex frame stays locked and works properly when you open and close the pouch.
