Make a Cute Heart Bookmark with a Free Sewing Pattern – Valentine’s Day Gift Idea

As an avid reader, there’s nothing quite like getting lost in the pages of a good book. And with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I decided to add a touch of love to my reading adventures by creating adorable heart-shaped bookmarks using my favourite fabric scraps. Trust me, this DIY project is as delightful as it sounds!💖

One of the perks of this project is its simplicity. Whether you’re a seasoned seamstress or a beginner, these heart bookmarks are a breeze to make. It’s an easy way to unleash your creativity, even if you only have a few spare minutes. And let’s be honest – who doesn’t love a quick and enjoyable crafting session (especially if you’ve lost your sew-jo)?

what you’ll need to make your own corner bookmarks

First and foremost, you’ll want your favourite fabric scraps! Before diving in, ensure you have the template printed to check for large enough fabric pieces. I highly recommend using a woven fabric, such as quilting cotton or poplin.

If you are looking for a new fabric, check out Minerva! They have beautiful materials available in many colours and prints!

When working with a lightweight fabric, fuse woven interfacing to the back of the fabric to give it extra stability and durability.

Depending on your fabric choice, you may want to add a stabiliser to the mix. My go-to stabiliser for this project is Decovil Light. It’s fusible and thin, and I don’t have to worry about added bulk.

And let’s remember other essentials such as a sewing machinethreadneedle, fabric scissors and iron.

How to make a cute bookmark in minutes!

Now that you have everything let’s dive into the fun part – making those quick and easy bookmarks!

Step 1: Cut out the front, back, and back tab from your chosen fabric.

Step 2: Cut out the stabiliser.

TIP: to reduce the bulk at the seam, use the dotted line as a template.

Here’s a nifty tip for achieving sharp corners – it might sound a bit counter-intuitive, but bear with me. When working with a stabiliser like Decovil Light, trim away a tiny sliver of the stabiliser right at the corner.

This step might seem subtle, but it helps the fabric lay flat and keeps your corner on point.

Step 3: Centre and fuse the stabiliser to the wrong side of the front piece.

Step 4: Take the back piece and fold the bottom edge towards the wrong side by 1 cm (3/8″). Press it flat and topstitch along the folded edge.

(If you worry about the fabric fraying, you can serge the edge beforehand.)

Step 5: Take the back tab and fold it in half diagonally, wrong sides together. Press it flat and topstitch along the folded edge.

Step 6: With right sides facing each other, place the back tab on top of the front and align it at the bottom corner. Then, take the back piece and line it up along the top edge. (The back and back tab will overlap slightly.) Use pins or clips to hold all pieces in place.

Step 7: Sew the seam using 1 cm (3/8″) seam allowance.

Don’t sew all the way to the corner! Instead, as you approach the corner, pivot your fabric and sew one or two stitches across.

Step 8: Snip the seam allowance into the top V corner. This will help the seam lay nice and flat. Then, using pinking shears, trim the seam allowance by half.

Step 9: Turn the bookmark right side out, press it flat, and topstitch around all sides.

And there you have it! A charming corner bookmark crafted from your favourite fabric scraps. They make fantastic gifts for family and friends. Picture handing someone a book and slipping one of these handmade bookmarks inside – it adds that extra touch, a little surprise that makes the reading experience even more delightful.
